Small Food Businesses Get Olympic Coaching Too

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has invested money into a food hygiene and safety training programme to help raise the standards of small food business, well ahead of the Summer 2012 Olympics.

The food assurance business NSF-CMi was awarded the contract, and will work with selected local authorities around Olympic venues to coach up to 2,000 small catering businesses in basic food hygiene standards, including hand-washing practices.

With 10million spectators expected for the Olympics across 40 venues, it’s estimated that over 14million meals will be served at those locations alone. On top of that, the UK is anticipating 30million tourists this year, so it’s important to bring food hygiene standards up to the correct level before the crowds arrive.

In Good Hands

NSF-CMi have 26 years’ experience in food hygiene training over the UK hotel, catering and hospitality sectors, and will be developing specially-designed safety videos and animations. In addition, food hygiene training will take place in classrooms and on-site at the participants’ premises.

David Edwards, director of NSF-CMi, who is in charge of the design and development of the programme said:
“Our focus has always been to deliver high quality coaching and training, using our technical expertise and industry insight to develop effective and innovative content and materials.

“We will be looking at how we can use these new materials in innovative ways after the Olympics to provide ongoing support to local authorities in their bid to drive up food hygiene standards in their areas.”
